The Cultural and Literary Committee of Don Bosco College organised a vibrant celebration of Hindi Diwas, bringing students together in a tribute to the Hindi language and its rich literary heritage on 23 September, 2026. The programme opened with a welcome dance performed by Siya, setting the tone for the celebrations that followed. The event was graced by chief guest Mamta Verlekar, Assistant Professor at the Hindi Department, Goa University.
A wallpaper featuring original poems written by students of the college was unveiled by the chief guest during the programme.
In her address, Verlekar spoke about how speakers of one language often harbour prejudice against those who speak another, citing the divide between Hindi and English speakers as an example. She spoke at length about the inclusiveness of Hindi, noting how the language has embraced words from Portuguese, Arabic and Urdu over time. She further remarked that there is no such thing as "pure" or "impure" Hindi, asserting that every dialect, whether spoken by intellectuals or roadside vendors carries its own beauty, and that neither should be placed above the other.
The cultural programme that followed started with a tribute to Sant Kabirdas, an icon whose presence is considered essential to any Hindi celebration. Students Obeth and Ajay opened with a rendition of "Kabir Ke Dohe," followed by "Zara Halke Gaadi Haako." The event also featured recitations of original poems by students Aarna, Ajay and Manju.
The highlight of the event was a skit based on "Jamun Ka Ped," a celebrated satirical short story by the renowned Urdu and Hindi writer Krishan Chander. A short video, capturing students sharing their personal thoughts and perspectives on the Hindi language and the significance of Hindi Diwas was also presented. This was followed by a dance performance by Laxmi, set to Sant Kabirdas's dohe "Guru Govind Dou Khade, Kaake Laagoon Paye," which places the teacher above the divine.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by event coordinator and Assistant Professor Dikshita Revodkar, who expressed gratitude to the participants, co-organisers and volunteers for making the celebration a resounding success.
